The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and largest public research university, founded in 1811 and originally named the Royal Frederick University. It played a central role in the development of Norway as a modern nation and remained the country’s only university for more than a century. Today, the university has tens of thousands of students and a wide range of academic programs spread across eight faculties, covering fields such as law, medicine, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, education, and theology. Its historic main campus is located in the center of Oslo, while most teaching and research activities take place at the modern Blindern campus. The University of Oslo is known for strong contributions to science and culture and has been home to several Nobel Prize laureates and internationally respected scholars.
