It was founded in 1876 under the name Ringnes & Co by brothers Amund and Ellef Ringnes together with financier Axel Heiberg. The first beer was brewed in 1877 in what was then Christiania (now Oslo). Over the years, Ringnes has grown and today produces beer, soft drinks and mineral water, with multiple production plants across Norway.
The founders were committed to quality and innovation — among the first in Norway (and possibly the second in the world) to develop and use their own purified yeast strain, which contributed to consistent brewing quality. As part of its history, Ringnes supported famous polar expeditions, financing explorations that led to Arctic islands being named after the founders and their sponsor.
Throughout the 20th century, Ringnes evolved from a family-owned brewery into a larger corporation. Today it remains a major provider of drinks in Norway and a prominent name in the Norwegian beverage market.
