Norsk Folkemuseum is Norway’s largest museum of cultural history, located on the Bygdøy peninsula near Oslo. It features a vast open-air section composed of around 160 historic buildings relocated from different parts of Norway — representing rural and urban life, diverse regions, time periods and social classes. One of the centrepieces is the medieval Gol Stave Church, dating from the 1200s. Inside, the museum houses large collections of artifacts including folk art, folk costumes, Sami cultural objects, and more, offering visitors a vivid insight into how life in Norway evolved from the 1500s to the present. Established in 1894, the museum aims to preserve, document and present the everyday life, traditions and cultural heritage of Norwegian society across centuries.
