Klemetsrud Renseanlegg, located in the Klemetsrud area of Oslo, is Norway’s largest wastewater and energy‑recovery facility, playing a central role in the city’s environmental and waste management strategy. The plant processes hundreds of thousands of tonnes of waste annually, converting household waste into energy and providing district heating for the city. As one of the largest point sources of CO₂ emissions in Oslo, it has become a focus for advanced carbon capture initiatives, with plans to implement a full-scale carbon capture facility capable of capturing hundreds of thousands of tonnes of CO₂ per year. The facility also serves as a key component of Oslo’s broader green infrastructure efforts, linking energy recovery with sustainable urban development and contributing to the city’s goals for a circular economy and reduced reliance on fossil fuels. Architecturally and operationally, Klemetsrud Renseanlegg combines large-scale incineration and energy conversion technologies, including multiple incineration lines, waste handling systems, and integration with the district heating network. Beyond its technical functions, the plant represents a strategic testbed for climate mitigation and green innovation, balancing energy production, environmental responsibility, and urban sustainability.
