The radar visible in Østmarka, Oslo, is the Haukåsen Radar, a prominent air traffic control radar located on Haukåsen Hill in Østmarka. This radar is a key component of Norway's air traffic management system, serving Oslo's Gardermoen Airport. The radar is housed within a distinctive white radome, often referred to as "the golf ball," and is situated at an elevation of 357 meters above sea level. Due to its elevated position and unique appearance, it is visible from various parts of Oslo, including areas like Østmarka, Grorud, and Haugerud.
The Haukåsen Radar was established in 1964 and operates remotely under the supervision of Oslo ATCC (Area Control Center) in Røyken. The radar's rotating antenna can be glimpsed through a grate when standing directly beneath the dome. Interestingly, some geocachers have reported that the radar's radiation can interfere with GPS equipment in its vicinity.
For those interested in visiting, Haukåsen serves as a popular hiking destination. The area is well-connected by marked trails and offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The radar itself has become an iconic landmark, often featured in local photography and outdoor activities.
