Equinor ASA is a major Norwegian multinational energy company based in Stavanger, Norway. Founded in 1972 under the name Statoil, it grew through decades of oil and gas exploration and production — and in 2007 merged with the oil and gas division of Norsk Hydro — before rebranding as Equinor in 2018. Today, Equinor operates in some 36 countries and remains a global player in petroleum and natural gas, while also branching out into petrochemicals and, increasingly, renewable energy and low-carbon solutions. The Norwegian government is the largest shareholder, controlling roughly 67 % of the company. Over the years, Equinor has played a central role in developing Norway’s offshore oil and gas resources, contributing significantly to the national economy while expanding internationally. In recent years, Equinor has signalled ambitions to transform into a broader energy company, balancing its established fossil-fuel business with investments in renewables and efforts to reduce emissions, even as oil and gas remain at the core of its operations.
