When it opened in 1928, it seated nearly 2,000 people and was the largest cinema in Scandinavia. The venue quickly became a cultural landmark, adopting new film technologies early, such as widescreen and 70 mm projection, which helped establish its reputation for high-quality cinematic experiences.
A major fire in 1963 caused the dome to collapse and severely damaged the building, but it was rebuilt and modernized the following year. In the late 1980s, the cinema was transformed into a multiscreen complex, and later upgrades made its main hall the largest THX-certified cinema auditorium in the world.
Today, Colosseum Kino remains a prominent cultural venue in Oslo, known for hosting major film premieres and delivering state-of-the-art movie experiences.
