Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden at Tøyen is Norway's oldest botanical garden, established in 1814. It is part of the Natural History Museum under the University of Oslo and covers an area of 15 hectares (approx. 37 acres). The garden houses about 35,000 plants across 8,500 species from all over the world. The area is divided into various thematic sections, including a systematic garden, a medicinal garden, a rock garden, and an arboretum (a collection of trees). Among its most famous attractions are the two historic greenhouses, the Palm House and the Victoria House. The garden serves both as a scientific facility for preserving endangered species and as a vital "green lung" for the city's population. A special feature is "Great-grandmother's Garden," a sensory garden with old perennials specifically designed for people with dementia. In the center of the garden lies Tøyen Manor, the oldest building owned by the University of Oslo.
