Located 145 meters above sea level, the lake is part of the Sørkedalsvassdraget watercourse and serves as a natural divide between the forested areas of Nordmarka and Vestmarka. The lake is fed primarily by the river Sørkedalselva and drains into the Lysakerelva, which eventually flows into the Oslo Fjord. Historically, the lake was an important part of the local timber industry, as it was used for timber floating from the vast forests of Nordmarka down to the sawmills along the river.
Today, Bogstadvannet is one of the most popular recreational areas in the Oslo region, offering a wide range of activities throughout the year. During the summer, it is a favored spot for swimming, rowing, and fishing, with several public beaches such as "Sørkedalsbadet." In the winter, the frozen lake is frequently used for ice skating and serves as a starting point for numerous cross-country skiing trails. The lake is bordered by the historic Bogstad Manor (Bogstad gård) and the Oslo Golf Club’s prestigious course at Bogstad. The surrounding landscape is characterized by a mix of cultural heritage sites and lush natural beauty, making it a key destination for both locals and tourists seeking outdoor experiences.
