Majorstuen (also known as Majorstua) is a vibrant and upscale neighborhood in the Frogner borough of Oslo's West End. Its name is derived from a historic 18th-century tavern that once stood near the present-day Majorstuen station. The area began to develop rapidly in the late 19th century, characterized by elegant "murby" apartment blocks and commercial buildings from the 1880s and 1890s. Today, Majorstuen is one of Oslo's most important transportation hubs, where all six metro lines, several tram lines, and numerous bus routes intersect. It is perhaps best known for Bogstadveien, one of Norway's most exclusive shopping streets, which runs through the heart of the district. The neighborhood is also home to Majorstuen School and several cultural institutions, including the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Colosseum Cinema, the world's largest THX-certified cinema. The spelling and pronunciation of the name—whether to use the more traditional "Majorstuen" or the more radical "Majorstua"—has long been a subject of local debate and linguistic policy in Oslo.
