Stortinget

The Storting is the supreme legislature of Norway, established in 1814 by the Constitution of Norway. Located in Oslo, it consists of 169 representatives elected every four years from 19 constituencies. As a unicameral parliament (since 2009), its primary responsibilities include passing laws, approving the national budget, and supervising the executive branch (the Government). Norway operates under a parliamentary system, meaning the Government must have the confidence of the Storting to remain in power. The parliament operates through 12 standing committees where the majority of legislative work takes place before being voted on in plenary sessions.
